History Old and New

Our Curator Cat at Harrison House, Frankie, strikes a dignified pose this week . . .

A black and white cat sits in front of a colorful quilt.

Though we think of historic houses as having old history, they have important modern history, too! This quilt is one of many in our collection, and it’s signed by quilters who were deeply involved in Harrison House. Several of the rooms on the Harrison House’s second floor were used by the quilting group, and we still have one of their old quilt frames, too!

Notice that “76”? 1976 was a big year for many historic houses and historical societies. Because it was the bicentennial of America (in other words, the US was two centuries old!), there was a big push to preserve our history. Public events and grants helped save many historic houses—and Harrison House benefitted from that as well. 1976 is now another chapter in the long history of the home!
