A Snowy MLK Day

It’s a great day for a Curator Cat to stay inside!

A black and white cat stares out a window.

It’s a beautiful snowy day outside the Harrison House—and it’s also Martin Luther King Day!

Wondering about the history of today’s holiday? It’s been around since 1983, when Martin Luther King Jr was officially commemorated with the third Monday of January. It took more than fifteen years of legislation and hard work to get that bill passed! You can read a wonderful article about that journey and Martin Luther King’s lasting impact here, at the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s website.

They point out that an excellent way to observe MLK Day is to volunteer or otherwise give back to your community. Here at the Roseland Historical Society, we’re indebted to every single one of our volunteers—so we can’t help but agree!
