House Hauntings

What’s the spookiest room or furniture in an old house?

A black and white cat in a bowtie looks over his shoulder at a plush rocking chair.

While attics, basements, creepy dolls, and leaky sinks may inspire fear in some, old chairs send shivers down others’ spines!

Our Curator Cat, Frankie, loves many of the old chairs that grace the Harrison House. But he remains wary of the various rocking chairs in the parlors and on the landing! Of course, for a cat, rocking chairs may pose an unstable challenge. But for humans, rocking chairs—especially those that rock on their own—can be a premonition of hauntings!

Many historic houses have tales of haunted armchairs or rocking chairs moving when no one is there. Here at the Harrison House, we have the opposite: a very sweet poem written by a Harrison family member, remembering times she spent with her aunt in the Harrison House—and of course, mentioning her aunt’s favorite chair. At present we aren’t totally certain which chair she was referring to: over the years, many chairs have been added to the Harrison House collection! But maybe during this spooky season, a friendly spirit will help us narrow the search. ;)
