Closing Out Artifact Trivia Two

Our last object for the month:

A black and white cat sniffs a kitchen implement.

We’ve had something similar to this object before!

This is a small churn (as opposed to the big butter churn that was featured in the first Artifact Trivia challenge). Frankie is obligingly pointing out the handle on top, which uses gears to turn the paddles down inside the glass jar! Believe it or not, this is another artifact that you can still buy brand new today.

If you look closely, you can see that the paddle inside the jar has holes in it, which helps encourage movement in the milk. As the liquid jostles within the jar, slowly a solid—aka butter—begins to coalesce. Though this particular artifact might not be so very “ancient,” it is based on a very old knowledge of butter- and cheese-making.
